Meet Our Board: Brooke Smith
Brooke volunteering at the Family Promise Day Center
What do you do as a Family Promise board member?
Currently, I am the FPGC board vice-president and personnel committee chair. I collaborate with the other board officers, members, and the executive director to make financial and strategic planning decisions to assist with the stability and growth of Family Promise. I also work with the executive director on personnel matters that may arise.
Why do you believe in FP's mission? Why are you on the board?
In the past, I have worked with individuals who had been homeless for some time. I observed their plight to get out of their current situation and noticed several obstacles as they looked for work. For instance, how does one obtain and keep employment if maintaining proper hygiene is not available? If a person does not have a safe place to sleep, how can that person be well rested for another day of work? I noticed that stable housing is the boost that is needed to overcome financial difficulty. That’s why I was drawn to Family Promise and their mission to assist families with children in becoming independent through assistance with housing and continued case management. Our programs work! Over 80% of our families transition to stable housing.
How can others join you and support the Family Promise mission?
Although COVID-19 has changed some of our procedures, we are still utilizing host congregations to house families in need. If your church or organization would like more information, please contact us. If you would like to support our belief that every child deserves a home but are not able to assist at this time physically, we also accept financial donations through our website or by check made to Family Promise of Greater Chattanooga, P.O. Box 1146, Chattanooga, TN 37401.
