Host Congregation

VOLUNTEERS OF ALL FAITHS CHANGING LIVES

Family Promise’s shelter program relies on a partnership of interfaith congregations and other volunteer groups to help local families facing homelessness. Our host sites provide lodging, meals and hospitality to families in need. For families in the program, each day begins with breakfast at a host site with volunteers, followed by a bus ride to our Center. In the evening, guests return to the host site, where volunteers provide dinner and spend some quality time. The evening hours are for homework, relaxing and family fun time, as they would be with any family. Each day ends with the family all together, under one roof.

HOST CONGREGATIONS

Local houses of worship provide temporary overnight lodging in otherwise unused spaces in their buildings. A host congregation team of volunteers may be involved with the following:

  • Cooking and hosting dinner

  • Spending the evening with families, talking, tutoring kids or playing games

  • Sleeping overnight in the congregation

  • Coordinating children’s crafts & activities

  • Donating necessary supplies for the hosting week

  • Setting up and breaking down guest families’ rooms

Manageable Commitment

  • Families stay overnight, not 24 hours a day

  • Each congregation hosts families for just one week, four times a year

  • Guests consist of only two to four families (14 children & adults max)

  • Family Promise runs criminal background checks and drug screenings on all program participants

  • A Family Promise driver transports the families to and from the host facility and carries their bedding and luggage to each new host location

SUPPORT CONGREGATION

Support Congregations do not host guest families. They do, however, offer their help through volunteers that assist the hosting congregations with such things as meals, playing and tutoring children, interacting with parents and giving in-kind donations (food, toiletries, clothing, school supplies, etc.), and through staffing our Family Day Center.

Serving as a Support Congregation also creates the opportunity for the members of the congregation to help live out their faith’s tradition of helping those in need and positively impact Chattanooga’s community. We’re so fortunate to have these generous people volunteer their time and talents at the congregations, our Family Day Center, and our projects and events.

The Family Promise of Greater Chattanooga staff is always in close contact with our congregations throughout the process, and is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If your group wants to join us as either a host or a support congregation, please contact us at (423) 756-3891.

We need your help! Can your faith group become a host or support congregation?

Become a host or support congregation.

WE THANK OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS!
